Year 9 students have been working through a Circus Day challenge hosted at Oriel.
The students spent time learning juggling skills with Diabolos, Peacock Feathers, Scarfs, Spinning Plates and Poi. All the circus skills are designed to improve such general physical skills as balance, co-ordination & rhythm but in a way not normally available to schools.
The day ended with a performance in the Hall with students showing off their newly-acquired skills.

Local artist, Margaret Carver, noted for her Norfolk & N. Suffolk landscapes has made her first visit to Oriel College, to work with a small group of KS3 students.
Noted as a miniature painter, Mrs Carver brought some of her work to show the students what varied and special landscape they have on the doorstep. A landscape which gives a huge resource to an artist.
The students were shown how to compose a sketch and then they worked hard at creating a similar image to one that Mrs Carver brought along with her; a windmill on the Broads.
Both the students and Mrs Carver enjoyed working together and Ms Christofi is planning a trip to a windmill, so that students can experience working from a primary source.
Perhaps, one Day!!!

Well the plane has returned and the dust has settled. Everyone has recovered from the jet lag and everything is back to normal at Oriel Specialist Mathematics and Computing College…. or is it?
The trip to New York has had a huge impact on the students who went. This opportunity, provided in conjunction with GY Enterprise, has given the students an insight into business and opportunities on a global scale.
The conference was a fantastic opportunity focusing on global business. It involved three presentations from:
- Broadway.com – Online ticket sales company
- Juicer – Market Researcher
- Virgin Airlines – Trans-Atlantic Airline
Giving our students the chance to consider and discuss the meaning of global business, they have realised not only the massive scale but also the opportunities that exist in this and other international organisations.
Of course any trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without a little sightseeing and we managed to fit a lot into our time there. A list of some of the sights and activities include:
Circle Line Tour (A ferry trip around the Hudson, passing the Statue of Liberty and sailing underneath the Brooklyn Bridge)
- Times Square
- Horse and Carriage tour of Central Park
- Walking down Fifth Avenue
- Watching the sun set from the top of the Empire State Building
- Eating pizza at the first Pizzaria in America
- Seeing the site of the World Trade Centre
- Watching Phantom of the Opera on Broadway
- Shopping in Macy’s
- and much more.
This trip has given the students of Oriel a chance to experience all of this and has changed the way they think about not only business in the world but also the opportunities that await them!
Be the first to see the video diary of our trip, coming soon to orielhigh.org.uk.
