How would you like a concert at Oriel by Same Difference? Who’s that? Check out their website for more information!
All you have to do is go to the Drip and Save website, agree to save water and we could win a concert…Live at Oriel!

With water, everyone can make an immediate difference to their environment. The less water we use, the more stays in rivers and lakes, plus the less fuel is used to extract and pump water into houses, as well as to process the water that disappears down the drain.
Remember, all your friends and family can take the pledge and nominate Oriel, too. The more signatures we receive, the more chance we have to win an exclusive Same Difference concert.
In three easy steps all you have to do is:
- Go to the Water Saving Website and agree to do your part
- Fill in your details
- Select Oriel High School from the List (make sure you select the Oriel in Great Yarmouth)
If we get enough people agreeing we could be listening to a live concert in October!

In ICT Lessons students following the OCR National Course will be given Extended Learning, or EXL, to help them achieve their target grades. Rather than traditional homework, each Assessment Objective is delivered in class to ‘PASS’ level and then pupils will be expected to use these skills to attain the higher marks.
Head of Faculty for ICT, Mark Thompson, said:
"I really hope that this will get pupils talking with each other and their ICT teacher about their learning. By setting EXL for pupils we are giving an opportunity for these pupils to develop into autonomous learners. We will be using the VLE to collect in all classwork and EXL and so reduce the burden on the environment by becoming a truly paperless subject."
The first EXL tasks have been issued this week with the deadline set for the end of this half term.
Homework for other subjects will be written in students planners… if we all work together then the future will be bright for all students at Oriel.
As a student of Oriel, you are committed to taking responsibility for your learning and we need your ideas on how to improve your experience in and out of the classroom. Mr Sorrento, our new Assistant Headteacher, is going to be in charge of Student Voice so he will be ensuring that you have more involvement in the way the college is run.
A reminder of what you should expect :
- Your work should be marked regularly and you will receive feedback on what you need to improve.
- You should know your TARGET LEVELS (Yrs 7, 8 and 9) or TARGET GRADES (Yrs 10 and 11)
As a rough guide:
- If you scored level 4 in year 6, you should be achieving level 6 by the end of year 9
- if you scored level 5 in year 8, you should be achieving level 6 by the end of year 9
- If you scored level 5 in year 9, you should be achieving at least ’C’ grade by the end of year 11
Community Fun Run – 28th September 2008
Providing that the target of raising £4,000 for The Bobby Moore Fund for Bowel Cancer (part of Cancer Research UK) is raised, Head of Avocet House Mr Todd will be heading to South Africa for ten days on the 15th November in order to help build a local school and football pitch.
As part of the fundraising programme we at Oriel are planning on hosting a community fun run on Sunday 28th September and would like as many people as possible from the local community to take part. This is open to people of all ages and all fitness levels – it doesn’t matter if you run/walk or crawl as long as you are prepared to badger your friends and family into sponsoring you! If we get 200 people to take part they only need to raise £20 each to hit our target!
This is a fantastic opportunity to help a great cause and I urge you to try and raise as much money as you can. Hopefully this will also enable Oriel to establish links with the new school as well.
If you are interested please either download and print off the attached document and return the registration form to the reception of the college or if this is not possible please contact the school and ask for Mr Todd and we’ll make sure we get a copy to you as soon as possible.
