Full use was made of the holidays to start updating and extending the area of the animal care unit in use. An extra window has been added to give the animals natural light, an existing widow has been glazed and a new door inserted to give access from one area to another. In part of the adjoining building walls have been painted and an area cleaned and tidied to enable students to leave their coats and bags and put on overalls before entering the main area.
Extra hutches have been donated and purchased, rabbits being added to the existing guinea pigs and rats; with bantams, ducks, ferrets and hamsters on the way after the completion of a secure fence around the unit and area.
For the future a further window is planned to give more light to the side area and there are more walls to paint. Outside the surrounding area has been cleared of rubbish but there is still much weeding and re-turfing to do. A pond is being dug and landscaping is being planned for the future to give a quiet area for students to spend their lunchtimes and breaks; already the area is popular with students.
Due to its location the animal care unit does not get many visitors other than students studying this subject. On completion of the new fence and once landscaping is underway an open event is planned to welcome any visitors including staff and governors who are interested.
This year’s Gifted and Talented Summer School ran from Tuesday 22nd July – Friday 25th July 2008 inclusive and was delivered by Circus Ferrel. Circus Ferrel brought learners engaging and entertaining acts tied together with a themed storyline which varied according to the occasion. The circus workshops were designed to develop skills amongst participants relating to lateral thinking, team-work, and hand-eye coordination and developing physical fitness.
The summer school’s participants were drawn from lower school students at Oriel and students who were soon to be joining the college from feeder schools. Circus Ferrel offered learners not just a set of workshops but an integrated approach to achieving the best possible results from planning and promotion to production and performing shows; the week culminated in an afternoon performance presented to parents by students from all year groups on Friday 25th July 2008 which you can see here.

As an emergency measure, we must insist that all students and parents / carers / visitors do NOT bring aerosols or pump sprays onto the premises due to the fact that we have a student who is severely allergic to them and had to be resuscitated last week. The reaction is so severe that even an aerosol sprayed in a room some time before she enters can trigger an attack.
We will have no choice but to exclude students who continue to bring aerosols into the building. The Leadership Team will be conducting random ’spot-checks’ of students’ bags.
This ban includes hairspray, bodysprays, perfume, deodorant, etc.
Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter.
