Assessment Policy

Students in AssessmentAt Oriel, we believe that our students have the right to understand how and why their work is assessed. We believe in explaining to students how they progress fin their education, and in our classrooms we display the assessment criteria (the guide to levelling/grading the work).

Assessing work is not just about marking books – we believe that conversations with students about their strengths and areas for development are just as effective – we know this because we ask our students what works best for them.

We know that SAT’s and GCSE examinations matter to the future choices of our students, so we organise additional support. This support consists of:

  • Revision weekends – either on site or at activity centres like ‘Horstead’ in North Norfolk.
  • Revision classes and catch-up classes – organised by our faculties.
  • One-to-one mentoring or small group mentoring.
  • Issue of ‘in-house’ course revision guides to help with time management
  • Using brain gym before examinations and providing refreshments where appropriate
  • Formal issue of ‘mock’ examination results in the Headteacher’s presence to emphasise the seriousness of hard work and preparation.

We like to meet with families as regularly as possible to discuss the future and the progress our students are making towards their targets. We like to keep the meetings small-scale so we use ‘Academic Review’ days when families meet with the form tutor twice each year for a discussion about academic grades and personal development issues.

We also ask families of Year 8 students to meet with our team of form tutors early in the Autumn Term to review how well the new members of our community have ‘settled in’. We hold a similar meeting for new Year 10 students, to set new GCSE/GNVQ targets during the Autumn Term. Year 11 students have a special meeting with their subject teachers to help them prepare for the final stretch of their compulsory education.

We welcome visits from families during the academic year – all we ask is that you contact the teacher or the head of faculty in question via the office and make an appointment to ensure that you are seen as quickly as possible.

We value the hard work of every student in our care, regardless of academic ability. We thoroughly enjoy celebrating the success of all.
